Ceramics
Texture is a major part of my ceramic work and an inspiration for the completed design. Often I start out with a hand rolled slab, then look for a way to texture it, then study the clay for an idea for the finished piece. I save most of my textured scraps and then make what I call piece pots. I play around until I create something I like with the pieces. This inspires my creativity. It brings new shapes and styles to mind and then hand. I do have certain styles and method I have developed over time, that I do repeat but no two pieces are the same.
Mood is another part of my work. I work with a lot of Black Mountain clay. It has a dark mysterious look. I glaze it with matt turquoise glaze which works as a satin finish with touches of green. Mountains, pines and nature in general come through in many of my glaze choices. The roughness of many of my works is also reminiscent of nature.
